'What Swims Beneath'

"Filled with children's smiles - what a wonderful day!"
(Event volunteer Nina Bigoloni)

On Saturday, July 24 from 10am to 3pm at Rocky Point Park Gazebo and pier
the young and the young-at-heart explored 'What Swims Beneath' in the important marine habitat in the water of Port Moody Arm. Abuzz with activity, folks could be seen peeking into a live aquarium containing many species of local fish, colouring in a contest for Vancouver Aquarium passes and great prizes from the Port Moody Public Library, and  browsing through live interactive displays put on by local stewardship groups. The City of Port Moody was also on hand with simple steps on how individuals can help  protect the Burrard Inlet and Port Moody Arm.

I am so sorry that I cannot be there this evening. Thanks to one of the positive uses of technology matched with social networking (this is being presented, I trust, by a friend who shares my concerns), my words arrive in impassioned form while my body is injured. I want to share, on this last of possible input sessions, the concept of System Failure.

I have spent the last few weeks as a customer of a large corporation that is, ostensibly, trying to provide me with telephone, internet and television services. They have two billing systems which they cannot merge. They have off-shore customer service agents. The system is not working. As a customer it is easy to see that they cannot resolve problems as they arise. If problems could be fixed, one would assume they would have done so by now – each attempt at fixing the problems I have encountered has resulted in more problems. I am told by insiders that this is the status quo – and the explanation for calls not being returned and problems that seem simple not being resolved. Most of the employees I have spoken with candidly can see the system is a failure. Customers are leaving, unhappy with the service or lack thereof.

Large systems are actually prone to failure. And systems which carry health risks should not be erected in the first place knowing this.

I offer this free URL as one little guide from an Open University with information about System Failure… this is a concept I think you must consider carefully before including INCINERATION in the draft plan. It is chock-full of required reading but I share these points with you about the collection of statistics to support the plan: “ first,  the assumption that evidence collected in one context willapply in another; it presumes that context is relatively unimportant or is sufficiently similar. Second, the ‘evidence-based’ approach presumes a linear, or at least unproblematic, relationship between cause and effect; complex systems involve hundreds of nested feedback loops  & finally evidence on which policy is based is inevitably quantitative and statistical and as such conceals as much as it reveals.”

THANK YOU,
ELAINE WILLIS

Art ‘came alive’ July 3, 2010 in the Vancouver community with the first annual ‘Golden Brush’ Art Competition Fundraiser. Fifteen local artists, including local Anmore artist Jay Peachy competed in teams of three to benefit the Make and Break Arts Foundation, a non-profit organization to offer artists and the public opportunities to participate and create various forms of artistic expressions including visual and literary arts. Easels and inspired canvases displayed the spontaneous work of 15 local artists  The artists painted ‘with passion for the cause’ in five teams of three, blending different genres of art into one collaborative creation per team canvas.

A similar gathering of artists will be hosted by Anmore artist Jay Peachy and the Anmore Alternative News in the gardens of Roxanne's House, a well-known movie site featured in the 1980s movie Roxanne with Steve Martin and Daryl Hannah, on Sugar Mountain Way sometime later this summer. Details to follow.

Anmore's New Mayor Heather Anderson thanked former Mayor Weinberg

Despite the unco-operative weather man, this past 'long' weekend was very busy for the folks of Anmore. We partied for Canada Day, said good-bye to longtime Anmore Mayor Weinberg, put our 'shoulders to the wheel' for Mossom Creek Hatchery, and helped the Sasamat Volunteer Fire Department Association raise scholarship money by attending the Car Wash at the Anmore Fire Station. (04-07-10).

According to psychologists, activism is good for you says longtime Vancouver Sun Reporter and Visiting Scholar to the SFU Humanities Department, Douglas Todd. Serving the Tricities, and the Villages of Anmore and Belcarra, the Tricity Green Council invites the readers of the Anmore Alternative News to become active with us. There is a strategic working group focussed on Anmore set up to develop strategic action plans that aid in keeping Anmore Council socially, economically and ecologically accountable to the well-being of their community.

Good Morning:
I hope everyone is keeping well. I wanted to give you the heads up that the bears have returned. We had the Momma Bear and two cubs wandering around checking out empty garbage cans on Monday at 4:00 pm. As we live at the end of the road the neigbour kids were out riding their bikes.

Could all of you please email your contacts and let them know the bears have arrived and remind them about garbage (the day off) and the kids need to be aware that they are back. If you have any questions on Bear Aware or need information please email or call me (604-469-1084).

Thanks, have a great day everyone.

University of British Columbia Paleontologists Stumped!

This just in,
E-mailed to me by a concerned Australian tourist, 2 pictures captured on film and developed after returning home from the Olympics.

On a day trip to Buntzen Lake, Frederick and Wilhelmina F. Stone saw a serpent-like creature slithering through the water and quickly snapped two shots on Fred’s Canon SLR with a 200mm zoom lens. Within seconds, the green, scaly reptile disappeared into the depths of Lake Beautiful. UBC paleontologists have scrutinized the photos and word has it, a new species has hit the books. Introducing to the world, I give you Stone’s Anmorasaurus.

Wandering Wade, not willing to be out-photoed by a tourist, went on the hunt and came up with these certifiable, untampered digital images. Enjoy!

April 3, 2010. Most people in Anmore were cleaning up Saturday after a weekend windstorm that caused massive power outages, toppled trees, stranded travellers and damaged pleasure boats in the rest of Metro Vancouver. With winds gusting to between 50 and 90 km, there was some damage in Anmore mostly from toppled trees. A house on Deerview in Crystal Creek was reported to have over $10,000 windfall damage for the second time recently.

Fresh! Fresh! Fresh!

The Port Moody Rec Centre was abuzz on Sunday, March 14th as vendors and customers crowded around to taste, smell, and thoroughly enjoy making their all natural 'Make, Bake, and Grow' purchases at the Coquitlam Farmers' Market. Just over the hill from Anmore on the IOCO corner, we have at least three more  shopping days until the main market moves over to the Porier Centre for the summer months - March 28th, April 11th and April 25th. Be sure to mark your calendars! After this time, a small 'pocket market' will continue to offer a more limited selection at the Rec Centre in Port Moody.

The Coquitlam Farmers' Market is a fun family outing with snacks, music, a kids' craft table, and, of course, the fabulous vendors.  Displaying their locally produced wares both outside and inside the Rec Centre, the products range from: mouth watering baked goods, fresh fruit and vegetables; to locally caught seafood, non-medicated free range meats, and cheeses; to preserved pickles, vegetables, and delicious salsas; to non-perfumed products, naturally dyed wool, jewlery, and even, surprise Oragami Trivia Boxes - and much, much more. There is something for everyone!

The Unsung Heroes of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games – Little Anmore does more than its share

The Vancouver 2010 Olympics owe much of their success to the army of 25,000 volunteers who devoted countless hours to making the 21 Winter Games a resounding success. Whether working at the Athletes’ Village, organizing Olympic Torch celebrations, driving folks to Whistler, or schmoozing with the VIPs at the Olympic Family Hotels, the members of the Smurf Patrol beamed their broad smiles, spread their kind words, and welcomed the world into our home.

Nowhere was this spirit of community more evident than in Anmore ‘Nature’s Home’ – a small Village of fewer than 2,000 residents tucked up beside Metro Vancouver’s recreational oasis of BuntzenLake. Three Anmore residents were chosen to carry the Olympic torch and at least two current Councillors and two former Councillors were fully committed as volunteers.

Councillor Kerri Palmer-Isaak played a key role in working with over a hundred volunteers to organize the Anmore section of the Olympic Torch Relay and the follow-up breakfast in the elementary school. Former Anmore Councillors Ken Juvik and Glenn Coutts generously hosted Olympic visitors as they drove the VANOC cars to the various venues and destinations.

As for current Anmore Councillor, Mario Piamonte, the French Chef de Mission awarded a Games medal and a Certificate of Appreciation to him for his outstanding contribution of time, energy, skills, and translating abilities. In total, Mr. Piamonte worked and trained for over 360 hours for the French delegation and athletes at the Olympic Village. From raising flags, to shopping for champagne, to outfitting the athletes, Councillor Piamonte worked around the clock to support ‘his mission.’

While the National Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee gave a number of gifts to the volunteers, it was the surprise gift to the French delegation that symbolized the Canadian way. The nine volunteers put together a gift package from their own pockets that included the much coveted ‘red mittens’, maple syrup, smoked salmon, French/Canada lapel pins, First Nations prints, and other Canadian souvenirs.

Hurrah Anmore! Your ‘glowing hearts’ are much bigger than your numbers.

Happy 90th Birthday Grandpa Ayer!

Family, neighbours, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper helped widower George Edward Smart Ayer celebrate his 90th birthday in Anmore on Sunday January 17, 2010.Born 90 years ago on February 5th, 1920, on Mont Royale in Montreal, George is the second of four children. His eldest sister Carol just celebrated her 96th birthday.

Grandpa was full of giggles and delighted to be surrounded by both grandchildren and great grandchildren helping to honour this fine gentleman. An able seaman in the Second World War, George went on to become an electrical engineer, graduating at the top of his class at McGill. As a career Public Servant in Ottawa, he was largely responsible for much of Canada's conversion to the Metric System. George loves country living and his hobby for many years was bee keeping. He also knows just about everything there is to know about stars and indeed the Heavens!

Happy Birthday, 'young man!' We wish you many more years of health, happiness and love!
