About Us
The Anmore Alternative is based on the belief that a democracy should function in support of the many and not just the few. The Anmore Alternative has been created by concerned citizens to fill a perceived gap in vehicles for effective and uncensored communication in the Village.
It takes two to speak the truth - one to speak and the other to hear. (Henry David Thoreau)
The Anmore Alternative's inspiration, is local hero, newspaper woman, Margaret Lally Murray. 'Trouble in the house' Margaret Teresa Lally, that most Canadian of Canadians, was born in Windy Ridge Kansas in 1888. She went on to become a Canadian folk hero, standing up to the scallywags and scoundrels using the power of the pen - and "that's fer damn sure!" The Anmore Village Hall serves as a monument to this 'tough as nails' lady who went on to be honoured with the Order of Canada and a number of pages in the history books. To read more Click Here

An Anmore resident for over eleven years, Dr. Burton recently retired from Simon Fraser University where she was a Dean, Professor, and Chair of the Humanities Dept. Prior to this she was a Dean at CSULA in Los Angeles. Ms. Burton also served in a number of capacities as an executive in the Canadian Public Service, including Senior Advisor to the National Advisory Board on Science and Technology, chaired by the Prime Minister of Canada, first ever Director of Environmental Citizenship, Environment Canada, and Director of Skills Development.
Dr. Burton has a doctorate from Columbia University in New York City, and Masters degrees in Arts from Columbia and Science from the Johns Hopkins University. Before the death of her first husband, Lynn Elen was an elementary school teacher in Ontario - teaching kindergarten, first and second grades. An accomplished researcher and much published author in her own right, Dr. Burton serves on the editorial boards of On the Horizon and Futures Research Quarterly.
Born in Kentville, Nova Scotia, Lynn Elen is a direct descendant of one of the four Fathers of Confederation, Sir Charles Tupper. She is married to her lifetime friend and local stalwart in Anmore community service, Mario Piamonte, and has two daughters and five grandchildren. Dr. Burton strongly values honesty, integrity, and standing up for what is right... "and that's for damn sure!"
Associate Editor:
Kaitlyn Marie MacMillan (above right with the Canadian flag) attends Capilano University. She plans to become a teacher, just like her mother and grandmother.
Born in Ottawa Ontario, KT spent her early years in Anmore attending Anmore Elementary School. KT then attended Moody Middle and Port Moody Secondary.
KT's dad, David MacMillan, named Sugar Mountain Catering after the street in Anmore. On this same street, almost 10 years ago, legend was born when Grandma took on the bear. KT and Grandma were returning from their morning walk up Spence Way when Mrs. Bear stepped out from behind her fire hydrant (See Bear Naked article under Environment). Not more than 10 feet away from them, Grandma grew very large and very loud to protect her treasured KT. "Shoo shoo, you BEAR - get out of here!" she yelled, waving her arms like a crazy person. Mrs. Bear, stunned for a minute, looked at them and then shuffled on up the street. Legend has it that Mrs. Bear went back into the woods and told the other bears, "You have to watch out for those mother people - especially when they have their cubs with them".

On Sunday, April 11, 2010 the Anmore Alternative Green Team was constituted. Mindful that 'we only borrow this earth from our children', these young environmental activists will bring you the latest news and try to engage you in meaningful dialogue on topical issues.
Graham Girard has a UBC Civil Engineering degree and, while interested in all things environmental, has a special interest in protecting and restoring wild salmon populations.
Jessi Zapton has been actively involved in Katimavik and spent almost a year working in Labrador, Ontario, and Quebec. She is especially interested in sustainable living issues.
Jay Peachy is an Anmore Artist, and host of Sound Therapy Radio on CJSF 90.1 FM, who is very active with the arts community on the downtown East Side.
Kaitlyn MacMillan, Anmore Alternative News Co-Editor, spent much of her growing up years in Anmore and is active in a wide range of environmental efforts, and more specifically working to connect youth with nature.
Good luck to these new columnists and thank you very much.
