Note from Ruth Foster (Port Moody Environmentalist of the Year): 01-04-10
The Scott Creek corridor in Coquitlam is of some interest to me and I have done several programs along it regarding both salmon and invasive plants. The creek supports a large chum salmon run plus some coho but the stream banks are plagued with invasive species. This Earth Day action is a step in the right direction and is sure to be an awareness activity.

Calling All Teens Interested in a Career in Policing

Coquitlam RCMP's Intro to Policing Course gives Teens a Taste
of Life in Law Enforcement

Every year since 1998 members of the Coquitlam RCMP bring together
experienced professionals from policing and other areas of community
safety to offer 'Intro to Policing', a unique and dynamic course
targeted at high school and post-secondary students who are interested
in learning more about how to become a police officer and what the job
is about.  Registration for the spring 2010 class is now underway and
space is limited.

'Intro to Policing' mixes classroom presentations, field trips,
hands-on training and demonstrations to give students an up-close look
at the profession of policing. From a day in the life of frontline
policing in General Duty, Police Dog Services and Traffic Services, to
the work of specialized teams like Tactical Troop, Emergency Response,
Forensic Identification, and the Underwater Dive Team, 'Intro to
Policing' students get to go behind the scenes and meet the people who
actually do the job.  Other course features include a field trip/guided
tour of a maximum security correctional facility, a session of
self-defence training, and a chance to do the RCMP's Physical
Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) test.  'Intro to Policing'
students have a rare opportunity to learn about, observe and experience
first-hand the work that police officers do every day.

Many students from previous years have gone on to become police
officers in the RCMP, others have chosen to pursue careers with other
police agencies or in other areas of law enforcement, criminal justice
and community safety.

Dates: (course consists of nine sessions)
Seven Mondays 5:30 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.  (April 12/19/26 & May 3/10/17/31)
Two Saturdays 8:00 am - 4:30 pm (May 8 & 15)
Main Location:
Coquitlam RCMP Detachment, 2986 Guildford Way, Coquitlam
Fees:
The course fee $125.00 per student (financial assistance is
available).

Course facilitators and instructors donate their time and locations and
registration are provided at no cost.  Proceeds from course fees are
donated to School District 43 in the form of RCMP Scholarships. (Please
note: some school's recognize 'Intro to Policing' for course
credit through career preparation programs and have also subsidized or
covered the course fee.  Interested students should check with their
school.)

Subject: Resident on Strong Road Foils Attempted Break and Enter

Hi Everyone,

Well, who would have believed it!  Someone tried to break and enter one of our Block Watch homes on Strong Road about 11 am Friday, January 8, 2010.

I am relating the events as directly told to me by the resident concerned.

While resting in bed with the flu, the resident ignored a ring of the door bell and the barking of her dog as she was feeling unwell.

Within a few minutes, low and behold, she looked up from bed and saw a man, in his twenties, approximately six feet tall, heavy build, wearing a white hoodie, peering through her back sliding glass door.

When the culprit saw the resident, he scurried away.

The resident called 911 and the police arrived almost immediately  blocking off Strong and Thompson Roads.  They also brought their canine unit.  However, the culprit managed to escape undetected.

If anyone saw someone who fits the description and/or a strange vehicle on Strong Road on Friday morning, please let the RCMP know.

Please be diligent in keeping your doors locked and windows closed.  As well, keep a watchful eye.

Hi Everyone,
Another Block Watch Alert. The stolen television on Sugar Mountain Way, by the way, was a brand new 46 inch LCD Sony, bought at the Live Action for the Laurel Foundation Charity Dinner on Saturday night. It was still in its box. The owners came to our place after the function for approximately 1.5 hours and that was probably the time it was stolen. They had dropped the TV off at their place before coming here.

As you can see, the theft appears to have occurred very quickly. Please be careful and alert. Many thanks to Laurie for providing me with these fan outs to share with Block Watch. Have a great day!

Block Watch Alert- Noisy thieves on Sugar Mountain Way on Saturday evening October 24th stole a brand new 46" Sony television and broke into a number of vehicles, stealing a wallet and other documents. Be sure to lock your doors and vehicles. If you saw these crimes in progress or if you see anything suspicious please report your findings to your neighbourhood Block Watch captain or contact the RCMP at 604-945-1550  or Anmore Block Watch Co-ordinator - Cherri Woode at 604-469-1084.

Block Watch Alert (23-10-09)

Camille Tribe on Strong Road reports that Momma Bear and the triplets are out and about. and they got into Daniel Hall's deep freezer in their car port at 4 am on Friday morning. Danielle phoned 'conservation' and they suggested that when ever anyone spots the bears they should to contact their office @ 1-877-952-7277 so that they are able to track them and possibly relocate them. Conservation recommends that when the bears  return we should make loud noises such as setting off car alarms, banging pots and pans, or good old yelling - we want to make them as uncomfortable in the area as possible.
