Come on Folks!
2012 SVFD Team in The BC Lung Association’s Annual Stair Climb for Clean Air (Ali Sigariani, Greg Winterbottom, Mike Devlin, Ken Honigman, Darin MacDonald,Dave McCloskey)
As I believe you are aware - Sasamat Volunteer Fire Fighters, Brian Fish, Mike Devlin, Darin MacDonald , Neil Belenkie, Wayne Numata, and myself, did the climb two years ago. It was an awesome first year out with everyone doing well with their climbing times BUT the real "feel good" moment was our own Neil Belenkie being awarded the Top Fundraiser!
We missed last year for various reasons, but are back this year with a team comprised of :
Greg Winterbottom has been nearly three years with the SVFD. The self proclaimed "elder statesman" of the Sasamat Stair Climbers shouldn't be confused as a "slow poke". Greg's grey hair is a clever disguise for the man who has run the Boston Marathon on more than one occasion. Next time you seem him out for a run in Anmore don't try and keep up and make sure you're not in a School Zone or you will be pulled over for Speeding!
Ali Sigarian is a year and a half member of SVFD. The man of mystery coming to us from his native land of Iran where he is rumoured to be the defending National Stair Climbing Champ! Ali is by far one of the politest and helpful guys you will ever meet, I bet we will hear him Sunday say "Please Excuse Me" as he Zooooms by everyone to the top !
Mike Devlin is a six year member of SVFD.When not busy with his day gig keeping the world cool one air conditioner/ refrigeration system at a time - Mike can be found diving below the water for a little game of under water hockey or packing his back pack for his next worldly adventure.
Daren Macdonald is an eight year Veteran of SVFD. What can you say about Mr PNE Prize Home 2011? One of Belcarra's favourite sons "Skippy", as he is better known, can be found peddling his bike through Anmore and Belcarra while planning his next challenge to concur! There isn't a challenge that the department has thrown at him that he doesn't say "Sure I'll do that!"
Ken Honigman - A year and a half member of the SVFD, Ken is another one of the new Rookies that brings a positive attitude to the department and is willing to help out with anything. I actually think he thought we were helping "line" the stairs to keep them safe - not Climb them!! No matter, it won't be hard to see his wide grin as he races to the top!
Dave McCloskey has nearly three years with SVFD. When not busy climbing Mount Everest or Skiing the Swiss Alps, Dave can be found training mountain goats to Yodel. Not one to back down from a challenge, Dave once took on the task of writing an article for his local paper trying to paint an accurate picture of his fellow brothers.
*note some of the above information is fictional - You can decided what part*
As you can see, with a touch of humour, the members of the Sasamat Volunteer Fire Department really work as a team. We love what we do and we try to do it well.
We all bring various personal reasons for wanting to participate in "The BC Lung Association’s 11th Annual Stair Climb for Clean Air" this year. I watched my brother-in-law's father, Archie, pass away because of respiratory issues. I hadn't known the frustration of watching someone struggle for life when their mind is strong - the body willing but the lungs are shot.
It's a pretty brutal way to end your life and puts things into perspective, making the decision to get off the couch and raise some money an easy one for all of us. I'm sure I'm not alone, as Lung disease is the single fastest growing cause of hospitalization, disability, and death in Canada today.
Some quick facts about the event:
Over 500 will participate in the timed event to the top of the Sheraton Wall Centre.
We will climb up 48 floors, or 739 steps by the end, in our full Fire Fighting Gear and using our SCBA's basically adding 50 pounds of weight
So wish us luck, and send us good vibes next Sunday Morning February 26th. Just think while you are at home eating your pancakes, we will be pushing on to the Top of the Sheraton Wall Centre all in the name of "Clean Air".
Thanks for your support Anmore and Belcarra Residents. We really appreciate it. To donate Click Here

Ripples in Kindness
Daniel and Ginette Taylor are starting a 'Ripples in Kindness' program in Anmore. The idea is to honour selfless people, often without material wealth, who help others with no expectation of return for themselves. Nominators are invited to write a letter about these wonderful people explaining why they are so special.
The Taylors will play match makers. They will take the letters of nomination to different businesses. The businesses will then choose to recognize and honour one or more of the people in a special way. The nominee will then be informed of the letter content and the details of their gift of recognition.
Ginette and Daniel will make the connections for the giving. It is a win-win for all involved. The person who wrote the letter is taking the time to identify an unsung hero, the business is giving kindness, and the nominee is receiving recognition and a little something they would not have received otherwise.
Ginette tried this in her own business a few years back and says that "it was wonderful to see others taking the time to think of someone else. They are people with their own struggles and yet they still give to others." If you would like to nominate someone or if you have any questions please call Ginette Taylor at: 778-355-2064 or path_to_wellness58@yahoo.ca.

Anmore, and Countryside Village in particular, lost a good friend and a consummate volunteer, Ted Ulmer, last year at the age of 77. We remember the many years that Ted had his constant shadow, canine partner, Tom, a barkless Basenji, at his side. Ted and Tom always attended Village events, often getting into the spirit in heritage costume. They also regularly welcomed Cinnamon and her cubs and had numerous stories to tell.
Proud of his RCMP background, 'Was Fuzz' continuously gave back to his community. Tapping his experience in police work, Ted was instrumental in the early iterations of Community Block Watch in the Village. One of his biggest concerns was what he saw as the cavalier and selective enforcement of by-laws.
With limited mobility in his later years, Ted continued thinking about his neighbours. Many of his friends and neighbours benefitted from his annual pilgrimmages to Matsqui to get fresh corn. With the help of former Councillor Piamonte, he hosted Uncle Ted's Annual Corn Tasting. He also played Santa Claus in August, distributing dozens of cobs of the delicious Peaches and Creme and other varieties of corn to neighbours in Countryside Village.
Ted Ulmer is greatly missed by friends and neighbours. He is also greatly missed at the Anmore Alternative News. Our days always began with a belly laugh or two in an e-mail from 'Was Fuzz' destined for the 'Funny Stories' column. Ted was determined to help make the Anmore Alternative an independent voice in the community and sponsored maildrops to residents. Thank you, Ted. We miss you.

The Anmore Connection to Greenpeace - Co-founder Bob Hunter
Bob Hunter (left) with Ben Metcalfe, aboard the first Greenpeace voyage to oppose nuclear weapons testing in Amchitka
"If we ignore [the] laws of ecology we will continue to be guilty of crimes against the earth. We will not be judged by men for these crimes, but with a justice meeted out by the earth itself. The destruction of the earth will lead, inevitably, to the destruction of ourselves." (early Anmore farmer, Bob Hunter, Co-founder of Greenpeace)
Green Peace International President, Kumi Naidoo sends a message on Greenpeace 40th anniversary Click Here
"In 1979, after a long political battle, Bob Hunter helped set up Greenpeace International, but declined the executive director position. Instead, he retreated to a farm in Anmore, B.C., where, for seven years, Hunter assumed the role of farmer, father and freelance writer. He wrote magazine stories (winning five Western Magazine Awards), books and a column for the North Shore News. Yet this period was a low point for Hunter. "He is a crusader and he wasn't on a crusade," recalls his second wife, Bobbi. "Greenpeace was sailing on. And he didn't have a job with mainstream media because he had come out of the closet, so he couldn't be classified as someone who wasn't partisan any longer." From these depths, Hunter entertained the formerly repugnant notion of moving to Toronto. Urged by Bobbi, who was soggy from life on the West Coast, the Hunters ended their farming phase." Click Here
Bob Hunter, one of Canada's foremost and outspoken eco-crusaders, died at the age of 63 from prostate cancer on May 2, 2005. Hunter, one of the founders of the environmental action group Greenpeace, was also an author and broadcaster. In this interview with CBC Television, Hunter discusses his save the whales campaign, the balance of nature and revolution. (01-10-11)Click Here

As I read about "dozens of firefighters standing at attention on Friday as the bodies of two volunteer firemen were removed from a burned dollar store some 24 hours after reportedly entering the building to rescue any shoppers who may have been trapped" Click Here, it gave me pause to think. How often do we remember to say 'thanks' to our own Sasamat Volunteer Firefighters? Not nearly often enough.
These gallant men and women stand ready at all times to help us in emergencies of every sort. They are the first to respond to our health emergencies, our accidents, both traffic and otherwise, our water disasters, our out-of-control fires, and even the anticipated 'Big One'. They also raise money for our local hospital and other charities, and even have a scholarship for a worthy Anmore young person. I say, "Three Cheers for our 'unsung heroes' giving tirelessly of their time and resources to serve the communities of Anmore and Belcarra. Hip hip 'Hurrah'. Hip hip 'Hurrah! Hip hip 'Hurrah' for the members of the Sasamat Volunteer Fire Department!"

Anmore Has Some Amazing Philanthropists
Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart and Mrs. Stewart, join an Anmore table including the 2010 Tricities Spirit of Community Aware winner for the Environment, Elaine Willis, Anmore Councillor Chris Sedergreen MD, Laurel Foundation Director, Ms Trudy Schneider, Camille and Robert Tribe.
On Thursday, February 24th the second annual Laurel Fundraising Dinner was held at the Inlet Theatre in Port Moody. Since 1988, The Laurel Foundation has supported activities, programs and research for persons with mental health challenges focussing on improving the quality of their lives. Much of the fundraising at this event was earmarked in support of sponsoring a nurse to work with homeless people in the Tricities area.
Selfless Anmore philanthropists were well represented in much of the evening. Judy and Doug West of the St. James Well, Councillor Sedergreen, and Anmore residents Camille and Robert Tribe, and Elaine Willis were principal contributors. Anmore restauranteur, Fred Soofi, of Pasta Polo, catered the delicious dinner. And Anmore artist Jay Peachy participated as a comedian with 'Stand Up for Mental Health'.
The close to two hundred guests who paid $50 a ticket for the delicious 100 mile dinner and pre-meal wine tasting gave generously from the heart throughout the evening. When Camille Tribe realized that the musical trio was not being paid, she passed the hat for them. The musicians generously contributed the approximately $300 collected to help the homeless. The silent auction of locally contributed items also generated another significant amount.
It was a lovely evening. Thank you to all of the philanthropic heroes who gave so generously.
This is a very moving story. You don't have to be able-bodied to be a hero. As Larry Skopnik said, "My father told me, 'the definition of a good man is someone who helps when help is needed." To read about this amazing hero Click Here Submitted by Vince Montgomery (09-11-10)

A special article from Jay Peachy, member of the Anmore Alternative Green Team (05-06-10):
Mossom Creek Healing
I have been a volunteer at Mossom Creek Hatchery for over a year now and it has been somewhat of a life saving experience for me. I don't take that statement lightly nor do I attribute that to one or two specific events. I believe life saving experiences can be an accumulation of events that were catalyzed by a certain decision.
Most of my close social circle are aware that I have a serious brain health issue. Are you wondering what the difference between a brain vs mental health issue is? There is none! Brain Health is a term now being used by those in the medical community to avert the stigma of the term 'Mental Health', so that real work can get done! Society and Mass Media has demonized the term 'Mental Illness' such that people can't even say the word without feeling awkward or anxious about it. How many times do you read the paper and find that anything sensationally tragic has some association to a mental illness. Even if its not true, the media throws the term in there just to add more drama. Remember, they need to sell advertising. The truth is, only 5% of violent crimes committed are due to someone with a serious mental health concern. Could it be possible that number could be lowered if people who were undiagnosed were treated properly and had a social circle the understood the individual and supported them compassionately? Did the stigma prevent them from getting the help that is available? Are we contributing to this stigma by ignorance? Seems like we are all culpable, we can look away but there will still be blood on our own hands no matter how hard we want to close our eyes.
Are you now frightened of who I am? I've admitted I have a mental health issue and I live in your community! Most of my friends would actually laugh at that thought; I feel guilty for stepping on a slug in the dark. My close circle are not aware of what my condition looks like, but they are conscious that I do have something and that I have limits. Brain and Mental health issues are not visible like other physical disabilities, however they should be treated with the same respect by ourselves and society. Similarly to one who is paraplegic, they are conscious of limits, those with Brain, Mental Health issues have to be aware of those as well. Sometimes their mind is so compromised that unfortunately they are not able, so those around them need to support them and do what is best.
So what does Mossom Creek have to do with this anyway? Well for those with the challenges of the brain, its not just about going to the doc and popping a pill and then hang out at home until your next appointment in 3 months or so. It takes a holistic approach. Analogize this to someone who has had a car accident, just released from the hospital, can they now go out and run a marathon.,which they had planned on doing just before their accident. Well, the same holds true for someone who has a brain or mental health concern. You mind needs rehab, it needs a social environment that is supportive and one that doesn't really care about what you have or your past. The Mossom Creek Hatchery which was founded by Ruth Foster and Rod McVicar over 30 years ago. It seems with Ruth and Rod, their main concern is how you can learn about salmon and that you are there contributing back to the ecology, the community and society. Everything else doesn't really matter and even if it did, that doesn't become an obstacle, its merely an awareness of how one can best contribute to the whole. Is it more than a coincidence that a 'vicar' is a term associated with a parish (a community) and 'foster' is a term of nurturing. Mossom Creek Hatchery has been a sanctuary for me and for certain many others that I have come to know there. So remember the next time you eat a salmon, think about where it came from; I know I do and that I will fight like 'Mad' to ensure it stays that way.

(left to right) SVFD Trustee Belcarra Councillor Bruce Drake, Trustee Belcarra Mayor Ralph Drew, Fire Chief Larry Scott, and Fire Fighter Bill Cooke
The members of the Sasamat Volunteer Fire Department honour us on a daily basis with their largely unsung voluntary service to the Villages of Anmore and Belcarra. Whether a medical call out in the middle of the night; a forest fire on the weekend; a traffic accident on a cold and rainy night; a water rescue at one of our lakes; teaching our children People Safe skills; or simply serving up hotdogs at community events and lifting the little ones onto the fire truck, these highly trained men and women of Anmore and Belcarra work tirelessly on our behalf.
On Thursday, March 25, 2010, at the Board of Trustees Meeting at the Anmore Fire Hall, three of these local heroes were recognized for their exemplary service to our little communities. Anmore resident, Bill Cooke, was presented with his Federal Government Exemplary Medal for 20 years of Fire Service. Chief Larry Scott was awarded a 30 Year Long Service Bar. And, Belcarra Mayor, Ralph Drew, was recognized for 20 years of dedicated service to the SVFD Board of Trustees. Thank you very much to these award winners and to all of the highly trained and committed members of Sasamat Volunteer Fire Department. We appreciate your voluntary efforts for Anmore and Belcarra.

Cherri Woode - Leads in Efforts to Make the Village of Anmore a 100% Block Watch Community 22-09-09
Cherri Woode, Anmore Block Watch Coordinator
In mid December 2008, residents of the Village of Anmore met with RCMP representatives and Belcarra Block Watch leaders. The purpose of this meeting was to explore prospects for increasing Anmore involvement in the Block Watch Program. Leading in this effort was long-time Anmore resident and Sugar Mountain Way Block Watch Captain, Cherri Woode.
Thanks to Cherri and other neighbourhood leaders, since this time participation in Anmore has increased significantly. While we have not quite matched the Village of Belcarra with 100% Block Watch participation, we are well on the way. To date the Block Watch coverage is the area from Charlotte Crescent to Wyndham Crescent along East Road, and Sugar Mountain Way. In addition, organizing Hemlock Drive, Spence Way and McCullough Subdivision is currently underway.
The Belcarra Block Watch leaders report that with 100% coverage, not only does their community have a markedly low level of crime, but residents also have a good discount on their home insurance because of this coverage. Another advantage to having Block Watch coverage is that the RCMP will investigate an alarm if called in by Block Watch, when other wise they will not attend to alarms. With a smile, at the meeting in December, one of the participants complimented Belcarra by saying that their criminals had all moved over to Anmore. Not for long, I'd say, with the excellent results that Cherri and the other neighbourhood leaders are achieving.

A new documentary on Anmore devotee, Elaine Willis, by Glenn ter Borg for the BC Ataxia Society has just come out on July 31st, 2009.
