When the Teacher Left - Chapter Two
Kids' Progressive Story by Alesha Akatsuki (June 30, 2010)

The teacher sniffed the air. Children. Somebody stayed after hours. She looked under the desks, but nobody was there.
For a moment she saw a movement by the red curtains in front of the window.
“Ah-ha!” she shouted, as she pulled the curtains; but nobody was there. Were her senses betraying her?In the meantime, Sophie and Leon were outside, right underneath the windowsill, holding their breath.Mrs. MacMillan left the room and closed the door firmly. She didn’t have time to waste,
“So?” asked Sophie.
Leon took a small peek inside, and saw a simple empty classroom, as quiet as the night of the countryside.
“She’s gone.” He replied. They climbed up and jumped into the classroom. It was sort of boring; knowing that it wasn’t as risky, and that it wasn’t different than any other room with furniture in it.
“Now what?” asked Leon.
“I don’t know. Should we explore the school?” said his companion.
Leon nodded. Both of them knew it was dangerous, but their curiosity was greater than their conscience. They tiptoed to the door, trying to be as quiet as a cat. Leon slowly opened the door, as Sophie stood behind him, holding the tip of his shirt. Her eyes shut, afraid of what might be in the main hallway.
“Nobody’s here.” whispered Leon, as he turned his head to speak to the girl.
Sophie opened her eyes and followed Leoninto the hallway, amazed in seeing how not even the janitor was there to clean. They walked slowly, until a certain door caught their attention.
The door was made of wood, and tattered red paint. On the sides it had rusty metal in a renaissance style of decoration. The keyhole was also rusty, and had that touch of mysteriousness around it. Of course, none of them ever saw this door before.
The two twelve years old looked at each other, confused, without really expecting an answer from the other.
Sophie tried to turn the old doorknob to open it, but it remained shut. Right then, Leon took out his cell phone and took a picture of the door.
“Now we have proof!” he said, as he closed the phone and put it back into his pocket.
“C’mon, let’s keep looking. We might find some other door or the key for this, even!” said Sophie.
Sophie and Leon kept walking down until they arrived to the end of the hallway: the office. It was unusually deserted, but not quiet.
There were some voices from the other side of the “secret door”. All the kids at school called it like that because no one except the teachers went in there. And whenever a student snuck in, they always moved into another school without leaving trace. They entered the room, but couldn’t hear very well the adults’ conversation.
They got closer to the secret door, and leaned their ear on it.
“We might have intruders.” That voice seemed a lot like Mrs. MacMillan’s.
“What do you mean?” said somebody else.
“I smelled children.”
“Okay, send them after these kids.”
The room on the other side of the door filled with laughter.
Leon and Sophie stared at each other for two seconds, then they started to run towards the main entrance. When they reached the gate, they saw a floating key in the air. Leon grabbed it with his left hand and took Sophie’s wrist with the other.
“Hurry!” he shouted to her.
“B-but…” She replied.
“No time to talk! We can investigate tomorrow!”
The two of them ran away from the building, and into their ways home.

Amazing Aquatic Creatures of Anmore

Caddisfly larva- Captured in photo by Calli De Sousa in a Header Trough at Mossom Creek Fish Hatchery

The amazing Caddisfly larva lives in the header trough at Mossom Creek Fish Hatchery. It takes scraps from water and builds it around itself to make a shell. Amazing aquatic creatures are just one of the benefits of being a Mossom Creek Fish Hatchery volunteer.

To find out for yourself, just pop in to the Hatchery some Sunday morning around 10:30. A group of dedicated regular volunteers normally show up around this time.

We help do such things as clean the troughs, feed the juvenile Coho, pull invasive weeds, and almost always enjoy homemade bread, jam, and cookies.

When the Teacher Left

Brrrrring went the school bell on a Friday afternoon. All the children in Mrs. Macmillan’s 5th grade class rushed out the door, except to Leon and Sophie. They had planned to stay behind and see what really happened when the class was gone.

They hid in the cloak room until Mrs. MacMillan left the classroom. Leon whispered to Sophie “can we leave now?” Sophie replied “I’ll check."

Sophie tip-toed out and took a quick glance at the deserted room, then came back to the cloak room, and said, in a normal voice “the coast is clear!”  Her face filled with joy, she would finally get to school after hours!

They left the cloak room and rushed out into the classroom. Sophie and Leon danced on the tables, played with the math blocks, and read their report cards. Sophie had just pulled 2 inches of her report card out of the envelope when Leon heard the click-clack of high heels. Then, soon after, came the sound of Mrs. MacMillan’s voice speaking to the principal.

Leon rushed to Sophie and told her about the click-clacking and Mrs. MacMillan’s voice. There was a look on Sophie’s face as if her dream was vanquished right in front of her eyes. A tear drop fell down her face; “We don’t have time for this, we have to hide!’’

Quickly they ran back in to the cloakroom just as Mrs. MacMillan walked in the room, they were safe for now………

Uscal

The swords clanged, but Joshua didn’t give up. He jumped in the air, and tried to land on the evil servant, Eric. But, Eric easily dodged it, by jumping on the side.

‘You won’t defeat me in a thousand years, prince! Who do you think trained you?’

The room fell silent for a few seconds, but Joshua talked again.‘I am the one who cannot die. You can’t kill me. My energy is infinite.’

‘Unless I kill you with my sword.’

‘Shut. The. Heck. Up.’

Joshua was burning in anger. Eric, the servant that everyone trusted very much, just betrayed them and killed the king and queen of Uscal. He was Joshua’s best friend, for many years, but they suddenly became deadly enemies.

‘Eric, why?’

‘Simple. To obtain the elixir to eternal life.’

Joshua charged at him, ready to stab him, but Eric swirled his sword, making it fly a few meters away, too far for Joshua to retrieve it.

‘Die.’ Whispered Eric, as he slowly passed his sword through Joshua’s body.‘We… were… friends…’ Those were his last words, before he fell on the ground, lifeless.

Laughter filled the space, laughter of evil, and victory. Eric got his sword back, and licked the blood of  it. Joshua’s blue blood of royalty. Eric’s body shone in a golden light; and as Joshua’s body disappeared, Eric got stronger and felt the power flow through his veins.‘Hell yeah! Uscal, say hi to your new king!’

‘Jake! Lunch is ready! Come and get it or lose it!’ Said Jake’s mother, as he put the book down and got up from his bed.

‘But mom! I’m in the middle of a critical moment!’ He yelled back.‘What? The main character died?’

‘Yeah!’‘Well, come and eat otherwise you’ll die too, of starvation.’Without any more complaining, Jake walked down the stairs and reached the kitchen. On the table, were two plates with four slices of pizza for each person. He ate quietly, thinking of what might happen in the story, since now Joshua was killed, and Eric apparently took control of Uscal.

‘Hey, Jake. Happy birthday.’ Said his mom, out of the blue.‘yeah, yeah.’Today was his fifteenth birthday. His friends were all on holiday all around the world, in places like Fiji, Egypt, Los Angeles, all the weirdest places, you name it. So he had to celebrate alone with his mom - his adoptive mom. He’s been an orphan ever since he was little. He never had the chance to see his real parents, because his dad died while his mom was pregnant, and his mom died while giving birth.

After he was done, he put his dish into the sink and rushed back to his room. He launched himself on the bed and opened the book. It was empty. There were only the first few pages, filled with what he’s read up until now, but the rest of it, was only blank. Suddenly, words started to appear under the last sentence he read.

Years passed. Joshua was reincarnated, but he himself didn’t know about it..
