DAY 1 - BOWRON LAKES
Introduction
Wandering Wade and Blow Torch Bill went on a trip to the Bowron Lakes Chain this July. There were 8 of us in total, all of us united in our love of nature and seeing if we still have what it takes to survive in the wild for a week. I was the youngest in the group at 49. We range in professions, me the Handyman, Engineers, Physiotherapist, Nurses and 1 Doctor/Canoe instructor/ Bedtime story narrator. Please note that none of our significant others come on these trips, they lack the recessive crazy gene that makes one leave cozy beds and flush toilets behind.
Blow Torch Bill picked up this name for his uncanny way of lighting the wet firewood with his camp stove… and kids, don’t try this at home. Bill and I were usually the first ones up and we liked our chore of making the group's coffee. We were told by the others that they enjoyed waking up, listening to Bill and I bickering about how much coffee should be added to the next pot. Bill liked sludge and it was thick enough to be proudly worn on his chin all day. West Coast Trail Mix, consisting of Tylenol, Advil, and Aspirin was consumed eagerly with breakfast.
The days were tear down camp, pack, paddle, eat, set up camp, take pictures, dry out, listen to a story, and go to bed. In the midst of all this we would apply deet and wear screen doors over our heads, just to avoid inhaling the multitude of bugs.
The trip was far from cars, noise and the hustle and bustle of the city. For long periods, all you could hear is the rain on the water and the sound of your paddle dipping forward. And yes you could occasionally hear Bill laughing, even if he wasn’t in your canoe.
My photos and movies were taken using a Pentax WG-1. It is waterproof and shockproof, and Pentax really stands behind their products.
During this whole trip, including the driving, Bill and I did not see one bear. It was not until we returned home to Anmore, that we saw a Black Bear. Please be BearAware. I fully endorse this program. Please be part of the solution.
Now sit back, relax, and enjoy our great adventure.

Resources: Garmin Maps are the maps used by my GPS. On the maps, I have Waypoints of our campsites and distance traveled in the day. The colored lines with dots are the breadcrumbs or tracks my GPS laid out as we paddled the route. The hand written info is what was on the GPS trip computer. I use a Garmin GPSmap 60CSx. I really like this product.

Bowron Lake Provincial Park is a provincial park located in northern British Columbia, Canada, about 120 kilometers east of the city of Quesnel. Other nearby towns include Wells and the historic destination of Barkerville. The park is known for its rugged and mountainous terrain. The main attraction is the 116 km (72 mi) canoe circuit through the Cariboo Mountains, which follows lakes, rivers, and short portages between waterways. This trip takes about a week to complete. An alternative to this trip is the shorter Westside route, which traverses Bowron, Swan, Spectacle, Skoi, Babcock, Unna and Rum lakes. This circuit takes anywhere from two to six days to complete. The park includes glaciated mountains, cold deep lakes, waterfalls, and abundant wildlife. (reference Wikipaedia).
