The new maps are printed on a heavier stock "Stone Paper" which is more eco-friendly but still waterproof and tear resistant.

Business: Loam Yoga (09-04-16)

Name: Anthea Hughes
Address: 221 Westridge Lane, Anmore BC V3H 0A3

Services:  Yoga Studio
Phone: 778-875-0401

Anmore Alternative News question: What are your links to the Village of Anmore?

My yoga studio is in Anmore. My aim is to provide a community yoga studio for those in Anmore, Belcarra and local Port Moody.

Anmore Alternative News question: Why did you choose Anmore?
My yoga studio is out of my home, which is in Anmore. One of the reasons we choose to live in this home was the beautiful set up it has for a yoga studio. We back onto the forest that surrounds Sasamat Lake. As you enter into the studio you pass by this forest, travelling along the “nature pathway” that wraps around the house and into the studio.

Anmore Alternative News question: Please describe your business or enterprise.

Loam Yoga is a boutique yoga studio nestled in the forest of Anmore. This beautiful and tranquil setting is the perfect place to connect with your inner peace.  The studio is well-appointed, creating a lovely environment that will appeal to all five of your senses.

Here are a few of the wonderful features I look forward to sharing with you.

·        Onsite free (driveway) parking for up to 7-8 vehicles. Additional parking available on Crystal Creek.

·        Professional entrance that is separate and discrete from the main home. Forest bathe as you access the studio via the custom built nature pathway.

·        Large and separate storage area to for your shoes, coats, and purses.

·        Cork flooring that creates a soft, warm, and comfortable space to practice yoga.
·        High-quality Halfmoon mats, straps, blankets, foam/chip blocks and Yogibo therapeutic bolsters for your optimum yoga experience.*

·        Surround sound stereo system.

·        Aromatherapy to appeal to your senses (Sage antibacterial mat spray and doTerra essential oils) and soft candlelight.

·        SOKO tea and infused water served at every class.

·        Onsite bathroom/change room.

* Hygiene is of utmost importance at Loam Yoga. Bolster covers are removable and washed frequently, as are blankets and mats. Antibacterial spray is applied before and after every class on all used props.

Anmore Alternative News question:

At Loam Yoga we aim to provide a welcoming, down-to-earth place to practice yoga. Specializing in smaller classes, you will receive more individual attention than at larger studios. Offering Hatha, Flow, Candlelight and Core Focus Yoga you will be able to find the class that suits your needs. And if you don’t, Loam also offers private/semi-private classes that are fully customizable to meet your needs.

At Loam Yoga you will develop a deeper connection with yourself and with others in your community. You will gain strength and flexibility for both your body and mind. Let Loam Yoga be your place to connect, restore, and strengthen.

Anmore Alternative News question:

Experience

I am a registered yoga teacher (RYT) and completed my training at Kushala Yoga, Port Moody in 2014. I love the study and practice of yoga and aim to update my skills often. I have had the pleasure of attending focused workshops with these highly renowned yoga teachers.

  1. Janet Stone
  2. Leo Cheung
  3. Michael Stone
  4. Pedro Franco
  5. Zain Saraswati Jamal

Prior to becoming a yoga teacher, I was a manager in the Finance Industry. In this role, I developed effective communication, organizational and presentation skills. These skills have served me well as yoga teacher and studio owner.

A Short Bio

Hi, I am Anthea! I am a dedicated wife, mother, yoga teacher and fitness enthusiast with a passion for self-discovery and development.

I attended my first yoga class in 2001 after moving from Toronto to Chicago. Dealing with a multitude of life changes and the stresses of my demanding career in Finance and IT, I sought out yoga as a way to help me relax and heal my stressed body and mind. I still remember how light and undeniably changed I felt after my first yoga class. The holistic benefits of yoga were immediately clear to me and I have been practicing ever since.

As my yoga practice deepened, I felt the desire to share with others the peace, flexibility, and balance that yoga brought to my life. A few years after leaving the corporate world to be home with my young children, I pursued my dream of becoming a yoga teacher. Being well aware of the effects of stress on the body, I aim to provide a yoga practice where students can relax and relieve tension while at the same time building their strength and flexibility.  I am a very active person and enjoy many other forms of physical activity, especially in nature. I practice yoga daily to keep both my mind and body flexible and strong.

I am a real “people person” and love getting to know my students. I look forward to practicing yoga with you soon!

Anmore Alternative News question: Do you work with other people in your business/enterprise?

Currently I am the only teacher at Loam Yoga. I do however network frequently with other local yoga teachers. I also practice and work at other local yoga studies namely, Kushala, Yoga Generation, Kukoon Yoga, and Yoga Spirit and Wellness.

Loam Yoga is also officially affiliated with Lululemon. The studio has been “approved” as a place of choice for its employees to come and practice yoga. I will also be offering complimentary yoga classes out of the local Lululemon store in Coquitlam Centre Mall.

Anmore Alternative News question: What makes you especially proud about what you do?

I am extremely proud of the transformation yoga has had on my life. Like many others in our fast-paced, demanding society, I have experienced first hand the negative side effects of stress and anxiety. It is through yoga that I was able to transform my life.

I strongly believe that our challenges enable us to grow.  Yoga helped me through my personal struggles. It allows me to stay steady and balanced through life’s ups and downs. I am so grateful of the gift of yoga and passionately want to share it with others!

I am proud of the passion I have for yoga, the genuine care I have for others, and for the beautiful space my husband created for me at my home-based boutique studio in nature.

Anmore Alternative News question: Is there anything else that you would like to say?

If I were to use three words to describe my goal with Loam Yoga it would be: connect, restore and strengthen.

·        The word connect describes the role I would like Loam Yoga to play in aiding people to connect with their bodies, their “inner self” and with others in their community.

·        The word restore describes the physical environment of Loam Yoga; its tranquility and peace that the surrounding nature can invoke. It also describes how the thoughtful yoga sequences are designed to relieve tension and stimulate rejuvenation.

·        The word strengthen describes how yoga uses both isometric and eccentric contractions to simultaneously strengthen a muscle as it stretches, creating functional strength that assists us in everyday activities like bending over, lifting, walking, sitting down and standing up. However, the true benefit of yoga lies beyond the physical. Yoga is not a "workout" it is a "work in". Yoga strengthens us on all levels (physical, emotional and mental) enabling us to deal with all of life's challenges.

Anmore Alternative News question: Are there any special ways that you or your company contribute to Village life?

As Loam Yoga is a boutique and intimate yoga studio, my goal is to create a community oriented place where people can come to connect with themselves and with others. I serve tea before and after class making the studio a welcoming place for conversation and community.

Loam Yoga has offered several free yoga classes to local Anmore residents since its inception in April. As Loam Yoga matures, my intent is to offer yoga at community events. I would also like to partner with the local school PACs to support them in fundraising initiatives.

Anmore Alternative News question: Are there any promotions, or discounts, for Anmore residents?

Loam Yoga is offering two opening promotional discounts.

·        10 for 10: Simply inform 10 friends* about Loam Yoga (via email, text, FB) and receive 10% off your punch pass of choice!

·        2 for 10: Invite a friend* to attend a class and pay only $10 for both of you

Anmore Alternative News question: Please provide any brochures or promotional material, business cards, links to your website, photos, if available

AAN Question: What are your links to the Village of Anmore?
Mel's Response: I have lived in Anmore for five years and my husband is a builder here in Anmore too.

AAN Question: Why did you choose Anmore?
Mel's Response: After building in Port Moody for several years, my husband started building here in Anmore and we fell in love with everything about Anmore.

AAN Question: Please describe your business or enterprise.
Mel's Response: I buy only the best organic fruit and prepare it for dehydrator. My fruit has no additives, preservatives or sugar, it is all natural real fruit leather at its best. I sell my mixed fruit bags which contain apples, bananas, cinnamon apples, kiwis, mangos, pears, pineapples and strawberries.

AAN Question: Is there anything about it that makes it especially unique?
Mel's Response: *My fruit is all cut and prepared at home and put into several machines where it is dehydrated at a very low temperature allowing for all the fruit to maintain the vitamins and minerals just like fresh fruit has.*

AAN Question: What are your experience and qualifications?
Mel's Response: I started making dehydrated fruit for my children years ago and had people asking me all the time what they were eating every time I went out. Once I would tell them, their next question was can I buy some. So I decided to take my experience to the next level and start selling it.

AAN Question: Do you work with other people in your business/enterprise?
Mel's Response: I work alone and do this myself.

AAN Question: What makes you especially proud about what you do?
Mel's Response: I am especially proud that this idea is my own and no one around is doing what I am doing. It is a pleasure to see people enjoy my fruit and talk about how good it is and how different it is from anything else they have tried.

AAN Question: Is there anything else that you would like to say?
Mel's Response: My fruit is one of those things that once you try, you will become addicted to it very quickly. I know how good it is and I want to share that goodness with others.

AAN Question: Are there any special ways that you or your company contribute to Village life?
Mel's Response: At the moment no.

AAN Question: Are there any promotions, or discounts, for Anmore residents?
Mel's Response: My fruit is the same price for all those who buy due to the cost that is involved in buying organics and dehydrating them.

Anmore 'Buy Local' Profile 21 - V Pilates
July 14, 2014

HAVE YOU HEARD?
*This is one of those occasions when you just can't wait to spread the news. I'm thrilled to announce that there is now a bona fide pilates studio, yes the real thing, near to us. *** V PILATES STUDIO* is open and Mona Valdes and her team are ready to look after your fitness needs and transform your body.

As a pilates devotee I can attest to developing longer, leaner muscles and tight abs  but that is just the beginning! Even though I am now into my 60's,  I am stronger, more flexible and have better balance than ever before.

All this achieved, despite scoliosis (curved spine) and joints which have been arthritic for decades, thanks to pilates and highly qualified instructors like Mona. As both a Medical Doctor and a fully certified STOTT pilates instructor, Mona is able to take pilates to the next level and work to heal and rehabilitate.

Whatever your needs, from energy and body awareness to core work, strengthening and balance, I look forward to seeing you at *V PILATES*. 'Just Do It!' for YOU and YOUR body.

*** P.S. Did you know that pilates work is not just for women? Did you know that many professional athletes use pilates in their training?

1. What are your links to the Village of Anmore?
Customers who live in Anmore, Family and friends

2. Please describe your business or enterprise.
V Pilates Studio is an equipment-based Pilates studio with highly-qualified instructors that aim to help clients achieve their health and fitness goals.

3. Is there anything about it that makes it especially unique?
V Pilates Studio is the first fully-equipped Pilates studio in the Tri-cities that allows groups of up to 4 clients to take equipment-based Pilates with customized and supervised programs.  Using equipment makes it possible to customize the Pilates sessions to either challenge more advanced athletes, or modify exercises for special situations such as assisting post-rehabilitation clients.  Doing Pilates in supervised sessions of up to 4 clients provides a more cost-efficient alternative to private sessions, while still keeping class numbers low enough for instructors to supervise and customize sessions. Pilates helps heighten body awareness and improve freedom of movement, thus preventing injury and allowing clients to do the things that they love. It is intelligent exercise based on the principle of retraining one’s body to correct itself from bad habits such as poor posture or muscular imbalance due to repetitive motion.

4. What are your experience and qualifications?
- Graduated as Medical doctor – Indonesia 1995
- Trained as STOTT Pilates instructor for Mat, reformer, Cadillac, chair and ladder-barrel 2007

The smaller group atmosphere also allows closer camaraderie and a stronger support system.

7. Are there any special ways that you or your company contribute to Village life?
I would love to be able to share information and techniques on things we can do to undo bad habits that lead to daily aches and pain.  As runners, my husband and I would also like to invite Anmore runners to come to the studio for complimentary Pilates for Runners class.

Q 1. What are your links to the Village of Anmore?
A 1. Williams has been a proud supplier of services to the Village of Anmore and its residents for many years. Partner and Director, Tom Williams has lived in Anmore for many years and has raised his family of 7 there.

Q 2. Why did you choose Anmore?
A 2. Anmore is a beautiful place and it seemed like a no brainer to make it part of our service centre. The homes are often quite tricky for large trucks to access, so we felt we could use our expertise and execute seemless moves for the residents of Anmore.

Q 3. Please describe your business or enterprise.
A 3. Founded in 1929, Williams Moving & Storage is a family owned Canadian corporation specializing in providing transportation, logistics, relocation, warehousing and distribution services related to a wide variety of goods on behalf of individuals, corporations, communities and government agencies. We have 9 locations in BC and Alberta, making us the largest family owned moving company in Canada.

Q 4. Is there anything about it that makes it especially unique?
A 4. The moving industry has a black eye for being filled with rogue moving companies. At Williams, we work hard every single day making sure our customers are at ease and satisfied with the services they are paying for. This includes a Move Manager that is your single point of contact throughout the entire move. We also have a number of customer appreciation programs, and our moves are backed by the moving industry’s only money back guarantee.

 1. What are your links to the Village of Anmore?

My parents live in Anmore, and have for the last 16 years.  We spent a year living nearby and enjoying the wonderful village atmosphere, the nature and the people.

 2. Please describe your business or enterprise.

We rent luxury villas on Lake Garda to people from all over the world looking for a wonderful experience in Italy.  Self Catering villas give the best balance between comfort/luxury and independence and freedom from hotel schedules.  We provide a high level and wide range of services to our guests, so although you are totally independent while here, you are never without guidance or assistance.  Some services include:  Cooking classes, mosaic classes, local hikes and excursions, wine tasting excursions, wedding planning with a local professional wedding planner, and other such.
3. Can you tell us a bit about the management?
Your property managers, Christina and Cristina, are specialists in their areas, and dedicated to your comfort and relaxed enjoyment of your holiday.
Christina-with-an-H is mother tongue English speaking, born and raised in Ottawa, Canada. She also speaks fluent Italian and acceptable French. Christina has been living in this area of Garda for more than 12 years, and knows what its like to be a stranger in a strange land. She knows where to find many of the hard-to-find pleasures of home (need maple syrup? Or how about can't breakfast without baked beans?!) and how to help you adapt and adjust most comfortably to Italy, Garda, and the way things work here. Christina's background is in Internet marketing, and her job is to manage all the guest communications and needs while here. She and/or her assistant, Wilma (Australian, and also mother tongue English) will greet you personally at the villa, give you a quick orientation, and help you with what you need during your stay.
Cristina-without-an-h is Italian, lived in this area for many years. She runs her own B&B and was an estate agent for many years. She is expert on the properties and their maintenance, and it is her job to make sure the properties are always clean and working smoothly. She coordinates cleaners, laundry, gardeners, maintenance men, plumbers -- all those things that go on behind the scenes to make sure your stay is comfortable and worry free.
4. Is there anything about it that makes your business especially unique?

Want a truly luxurious and exotic destination? Want to experience the lifestyle of the 'rich and famous'? Want to share an amazing life experience with a group of family or friends? Are you interested in living like the locals? Want a home base an hour and a half from Venice? Want to learn how to cook like an Italian? You can do all these and much. much more in a hassle-free manner with an Italian-speaking Canadian to help you find your way.

5. What are your experience and qualifications?

I have lived in this area of Lake Garda for the last 12 years, and am an expert on the local area and how to enjoy it to the max.  My Canadian English and fluent Italian makes me a perfect go between for guests and the owners renting their villas.

6. Do you work with other people in your business/enterprise?

Yes, I have a partner with years of experience in the local property market, and she negotiates with villa owners for the terms of our rentals, so we always have villas in top shape at the best prices.  She also coordinates the villa maintenance services, including the cleaning and linens, to ensure that the villas are always in perfect condition for our guests.

7. What makes you especially proud about what you do?

Our guests are always happy. I am proud of this part of Italy, and think more people should know it and enjoy it, and I am proud to provide a link that brings people here safely and in comfort, so they can enjoy all this wonderful spot has to offer without ever feeling overwhelmed by the differences, language, geography, etc.

We invite you to check out some of our villas below and to visit our website at www.holiday-garda.com

2. Why did you choose Anmore?
We love the rural setting, being surrounded by nature and at the same time being close to everything we need.

3. Please describe your business or enterprise.
We have been in the chocolate business for 17 years now. We import high quality chocolate from Belgium by the container load and distribute it in Western Canada. We also produce and sell Italian gelato.

We only use the highest quality ingredients, many of them organic. We produce chocolates for many private label customers and also sell out of our store front to anyone who loves chocolate!

6. Do you work with other people in your business/enterprise?
Absolutely! Our business is somewhat seasonal. We have a regular group of about 10 employees plus office staff, but in our high season we have as many as 50 crew members in production and packaging. We have a sales team and of course many customers, from large companies, over retailers to individual shoppers.

7. What makes you especially proud about what you do?
That we work with and create a high quality product for the consumer.  We started as a family business, and though we have grown, we still take personal pride in our business and the great staff who works with us.

8. Is there anything else that you would like to say?
I feel very lucky to be involved in the chocolate business (who does not love chocolate?) and that it is only a short drive from where we live.

9. Are there any special ways that you or your company contribute to Village life?

Executive Chef David MacMillan named his business Sugar Mountain Catering after the street in Anmore.

1. What are your links to the Village of Anmore?
  • In 1999 when we started our business we were living in Anmore; as our name describes, on Sugar Mountain Way.  We still have a deep connection to Anmore as our parents and our childrens’ grandparents still live in Anmore.

Anmore is such a beautiful place and even though we now live in North Burnaby, we still try to visit Buntzen Lake as much as our crazy schedule will allow. Currently we cater all over the Lower Mainland, going as far as Pemberton BC, and the Gulf Islands and we cater approximately 150 events a year.

2. Please describe your business or enterprise.

  • We set out to offer a unique and personalized service to our clients and this works especially well for weddings and birthday parties.  We do not, and never have believed in, set menus; in fact, we have a simple interview process through which our chefs will sit down and create something distinctly your own for your event.  We offer a complimentary tasting of some of these menu items as part of the process. We source our products locally and work with vendors who uphold the principles of sustainability.

3.    What are your experience and qualifications?
  • We have four lead chefs all with a wonderful background in cooking; one from Chicago, one from the Phillipines and one from Malaysia.  Our Executive Chef and owner, David MacMillan, is Canadian born and has been the Chef in hotels and one of Canada’s top 25 restaurants before starting his own business, Sugar Mountain Catering, in 1999.  He has also competed and won medals in chef competitions both in Canada and internationally (the most recent being at Eat Vancouver). He was also part of a regional team to compete in the World Culinary Olympics in Germany, winning a silver medal.
We love to incorporate ethnic components into our menus and this serves us well in a multicultural environment like Vancouver.  We enjoy creating menus that incorporate the various cultures represented here in our beautiful city and region.  We have catered many weddings where there are two people coming together from different cultures (i.e., an East Indian-Korean wedding, a Japanese-German wedding, an all Sri Lankan wedding, etc.).

We always enjoy working with new clients and should you have any questions or  would like to meet us, please do not hesitate to call at 604-728-6641 or email us at info@sugarmountaincatering.com.
