The Secret Life of SVFD 'Pumper No. 1' - 1954 LaFrance - by Mike Sullivan of Brier Washington (10-07-18)
..."The pumper was gifted for $1 to the newly formed Sasamat Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) serving Anmore and Belcarra BC in May 1977. She served the SVFD for 16 years with the distinction as the first engine for the department “Pumper No. 1”. Time passed and the love and attachment grew in this multi-generational department but insurance rating laws demanded a much younger truck and it became time to say goodbye". The weather might have been wet but it didn't put out the 'fire within' the SVFD firefighters who participated in the 40th anniversary International Fire Fit competition held this year in Port Moody. The relay race pitted side-by-side competitors in a multi-faceted challenge  against the clock. As in other years, firefighter Dave McClosky led the SVFD pack. We love our brave, energetic, and committed firefighters. You are the very best.

In 1976 the new Director for GVRD’s Electoral Area ‘B’ (Verna Barrett) realized that the residents of Belcarra and Bedwell Bay needed to incorporate as a municipality if they were ever going to control their own destiny. In order to demonstrate to the residents that they would be stronger as a “united entity”, rather than continuing to the battles with the GVRD on an individual basis, Verna recognized that creation of a fire department would bring needed community cohesion and focus.

Verna researched the legal mechanisms for creation of a fire protection special area, and identified the political hurdles that needed to be overcome. Verna recognized that people would not be interested in paying additional taxes simply to save their house or life, and proceeded to show that reduced fire insurance premiums would o”ff set the tax levy needed to create a volunteer fire department. A committee representing the communities of Anmore, Belcarra, Bedwell Bay and IOCO was established to study the proposal and communicate with the residents. A referendum on creation of the SVFD was held on January 22nd, 1977, which was endorsed by 75% of the electorate. The many challenges involved with starting the SVFD demonstrated the power of volunteerism and collaborative e”ffort which set the stage for the incorporation of the Village of Belcarra in 1979...

The SVFD’s 2017 Year in Review:

In 2017, our 42 volunteer firefighters responded to 100 emergencies in Anmore and Belcarra. These included: 4 structure fires, 34 other fire-related calls, 49 medical emergencies, 5 motor vehicle incidents, and 8 other dispatches.

We were happy to bring a new fire engine into service this past summer, as a scheduled replacement. Our firefighters enjoyed interior fire training in a live burn building. Thanks to the help of residents, we also reached the $153,500 mark in community donations for our SCBA fundraising campaign. Our first new air packs made a big difference for us on several calls this past year. Only $16,500 left to go before we can complete our upgrade. Thanks for the incredible support!

On call 24/7, our crews collectively dedicated 5000+ hours training and responding to emergencies in their home communities. Thanks goes out to each and every one of our firefighters. Proud to be part of this team!

Once Again SVFD 'Has Our Backs'! (21-03-16)

On Sunday, March 20, 2016, the Sasamat Volunteer Fire Department was called to a Hydro Pole on fire on Uplands Drive. They had to shut the road down due to the concern that the top of the pole could have broken off because of its weakened state. If it had broken there would have been charged power lines completely covering the road. If they ever need to block off a road it is because of serious safety concerns. The SVFD thanks local residents for being so understanding! We thank them for 'watching our backs' 24-7. Another big thank you SVFD.

Awesome! (05-01-16)

In 2015, the SVFD responded to 112 fire, medical and motor vehicle emergencies in Anmore and Belcarra. Thanks goes out to all of our members who trained and volunteered their time to respond to each of these incidents in the two Villages. It was our busiest year ever.

Today, our crews responded to the first two emergencies of 2016: a motor vehicle accident on Sunnyside and a medical emergency in Anmore.

Thanks to longtime Anmore residents Bill Fraser and his family for donating towards our SCBA fundraising drive.

One of the SVFD's founding members in 1978, Bill and his wife have spent 37 years supporting the SVFD as its grown alongside the two communities. After decades of service as a firefighter, Bill retired as an honourary "Life Member." It is always great when he stops by to chat and everybody enjoys hearing Bill share a story or two. One of the greatest. Thank you, Frasers! Not only for this donation, but also for everything else you've offered the SVFD over the years. We wouldn't be here without you.

SVFD Says Thank you for Your Help! (15-12-15)

The Sasamat Volunteer Fire Department would like to thank Bill Fraser and Dick and Joan Cresswell for their recent donations supporting the purchase of our updated breathing apparatuses. We have now raised almost $10,000 towards the $170,000 necessary to update our Self Contained Breathing Apparatuses (SCBAs). Anmore Fire Hall is decked out for the holidays with Christmas lights (13-12-15)

Thanks to the work of Devon Bullock from Silent Lights, Anmore Fire Hall is decked out for the holidays with Christmas lights. Devon donated his time to setup Anmore's beautiful Spirit Park with thousands of lights this year. Afterwards, he came by to put some up at our fire hall with the help of some of our members.

All of the lights were purchased through donations and funding supplied through the Village of Anmore. Thanks Devon. And thank you, Anmore Village Hall! All of us appreciate it.

The SVFD held its Kids' Christmas Party on Sunday December 13th. The kids were extremely happy to see Santa Claus and get an early gift or two. Thanks to Thrifty Foods for a $150 food donation to the party and to all of the work put in by our Firefighter Association, the Mueckel family, and of course, Santa himself. It was a great afternoon!
